Two very smart BT type female kids were exported to the Isle of Man in July from the Goosemead herd for Leslie Goodfellow who used to have a small BT commercial herd in Essex. In due course they will be mated to Sandford Caspian a pure Togg buckling who was exported to Leslie last year.

Also in July Keith & I delivered four male kids to their new owners in Switzerland. Three AN’s (Friarlea, Abbotswell & Holdbrook) went to Theresia Marbach in canton Luzern and a BT boy (Monach) went to Fabien Demierre in canton Fribourg. They have wonderful new homes and you can see an album of photos on the link below. The monorail was quite a spectacular adventure!

Two shipments of kids (50 in total)are due to fly to Trinidad for BGS member Lincoln Thackorie at the end of September.

Hot off the press:-Following much recent concern about non-SMS semen being banned for use in SMS herds, DEFRA acted quickly and efficiently to overturn this rule. So SMS herds will still be able to AI their females using non-SMS semen.

Further news of EID.
This only applies to goats born on or after January 1st 2010 and only to those being exported to other EU Countries. They will require one electronic tag and one non-electronic tag with matching ID.

Trinidad.
Two bucklings from the Ashdene & Toddbrook herds were exported to Trinidad by air from Gatwick on Feb 3rd for Lincoln Thackorie.  A further 50 BS & AN kids are due to fly to Trinidad in Sept/Oct.

There is no change to our PZ bluetongue status (which restricts EU exports to free zones) but I keep hearing we are doing well and getting closer to regaining our free status.

Many other enquiries are being dealt with including Switzerland, CZ, St. Vincent, Holland, Barbados and Ghana. If you have well-bred quality kids available for export with SMS/CAE neg status and preferably from milk-recorded stock please let me know. You would need to be able to do your own 30-day standstill prior to export.

Please note that although electronic ID (EID) is not compulsory for goats the following applies to goats being exported in 2010:-

EID is voluntary for goats, however, if they are born after 31 December 2009 and intended for export, they must be full EID identified. If you choose to apply electronic identifiers to your goats you should follow the rules for sheep. See:-

http://www.defra.gov.uk/foodfarm/farmanimal/movements/sheep/documents/guidance-0912.pdf

I will be getting more details on this asap which will be posted on the BGS website.

Merry Xmas & Happy New Year to you all

The situation regarding exports to EU Countries remains unchanged.  We can only export to Countries with the same Protection Zone status as the UK. This is particularly frustrating for goatkeepers in Ireland who are desperate for stock especially well bred males.

In mid-August a pure Togg male kid from Anne Edward’s “Sandford” herd was transported by his new owner to the Isle of Man. This proved quite complicated when DEFRA changed their EHC (Export Health Certificate) for the IoM after the male arrived. But thankfully all was sorted out in due course and this boy will provide much needed fresh blood for a small herd of BT’s.

Two “Holdbrook” AN male kids flew from Heathrow to Spain in early September for a commercial herd of Canary Island x AN goats near Cuidad Real. They will get plenty of work and it will be interesting to follow the progress of their progeny.

Live goats are looking increasingly difficult to export to Pakistan for Dr Syed Nasir Hussain Shah so we may try to collect embryos instead in 2010.

The enquiry from Serbia fizzled out.

But at long last after several previous failed attempts I finally got 24 goats to Trinidad in mid October. They comprised 14 white female kids from the “Goosemead” herd, four AN male kids from the “Monach” herd, three Saanen male kids from the “Sansara” herd & one BS male kid + two BS goatlings from the “Sandford” herd. Their enthusiastic and determined new owner Lincoln Thackorie has joined the BGS and transferred all 24 into his own name. He will register their progeny in due course which is excellent news. And he is so pleased with his British goats that he has ordered another 50 for 2010!

You can see some export albums here & I hope to have more export info collated for the 2010 Year Book:-

If you have top quality, well bred, high-health status kids available for export in 2010 please let me know. I respond quickly to all enquiries and work closely with DEFRA & UKECP to get more EHC’s in place for our British goats.
